Emergency Medical Technician-1

All on-campus EMT classes are taught by the Nursing Department and can be found in the college class schedule under Emergency Medical Technician 100 (basic course), 111 (recertification course) or 098 (skills lab.)

Fire Technology students are required to successfully complete a National Registry EMT-1 course prior to admission to the Basic Fire Academy. Fire EMT Recertification classes are taught as part of a 2 year continuing education program for firefighters at fire departments. When there are EMT recertification classes scheduled within one semester, they are listed on our information line at 714-538-0386. *(Basic Fire Academy graduates should also contact their Fire Academy EMT Instructor.)

General Information for Fire EMT:

The Basic (or Primary) EMT-1 class is approximately 128 hours long. Successful completion of the class permits the student to take a certifying exam. Then the successful student becomes an EMT-1 (and is certified for 2 years.) By the end of the certification period, the EMT-1 will have taken either 24 hours of refresher continuing education through his/her fire department (plus 6 hours of evaluation), or an intensive 30 hour recertification class.

All Fire EMT classes are certified under the current California EMS Title 22 regulations. The certifying exam for Basic EMT is the National Registry exam.

Information for On Campus Nursing EMT:

All on campus EMT classes are listed in the college’s class schedule. They are certified by the Orange County Emergency Medical Services Agency with classes leading to National Registry EMT-1 certification. Specific criteria for certification and fees are available from the Nursing/EMT Department above, or the Orange County EMS Agency at 714-834-3500.
